    My Boring Story

    I got a great little surprised when I met face to face with Access 2007 and all the menus were gone. I wasn't warned about that one! Not only are they gone, you MUST use little tiny icons in the place of menus so it takes you an awful long time to learn the icons, but not just that, YOU have to choose which icons will appear on your toolbar.

  • Actions in Drupal, or should I say Rules?

    I spent hours today to find this one module: Rules.

    In most cases, you can set up a rule in Drupal with their Actions and Triggers and it will work just fine. The fact is that these options are extremely limited if you want any kind of condition on the Rule before triggering the action.

  • Ada Variables

    Ada variables are complex objects. When developing a compiler, you must definitively take that in account. You have several sides to your variables: one you need to be able to handle dynamic variables since the compiler will have to be capable of doing all the operations on all the constant variables just as if you were executing your program and it has to handle all the tests necessary to ensure integrity.

    So... we need a library that can handle integers, a library to handle floating points, a library to handle arrays, etc.

  • A firewall inside Apache

    If you are running a webserver, you should use a webserver firewall. This prevents many attacks from being perpetrated on to your servers without the need to make your own applications more complex than necessary.

    The idea is very simple, if you have a few people who can edit your data from the Internet and those have a static IP address, you can check that the editor pages are only accessible to those IP addresses. Any other access can simply be blocked.

    Problem: Associate, easy! De-associate... but how?!

    The association of a label with another widget is easy to obtain. You want to do that especially if you want to hide the widget or apply some similar effects to it so both, the widget and its label are affected. This is especially true if you hide the widget.

  • Automatic ComboBox in MS-Access

    In MS-Access, you can select a special value for your combo boxes called:

    "Find a record on my form based on the value I selected in my combo box"

    In older versions of MS-Access, all you had to do is select the option and be done with it. However, the option would have no effect if the form was not properly assigned a source query.

    In order to paliate to that problem, Microsoft decided to check the current form status and, if unlinked, hide the option altogether so you cannot make a mistake.

  • Automatic Datasheet Columns Width with MS-Access VBA

    You may have noticed that whenever you create a Datasheet you can double click on the right edge to resize the column to the widest text currently defined in that column.

    This is neat but if I create a table with 10 columns, that's work. Especially if I need to reload data in that table each time I use it, 10 times an hour. (i.e. 100 x double click would definitively kill me!)

    Of course, you may not need to resize all 10 columns each time, but wouldn't it be neat to have the columns width auto-adjust with the data you put in that Datasheet table?!

  • Broken RSS feeds

    Since December 2008, I have noticed that many RSS feeds include invalid ampersand characters. XML has a very specific way to handle the ampersand character, you have to write & and not just &. Although it is similar in HTML, in XML it is actually enforced.

    This is neat, it ensures that your files are really valid.
